There is no doubting what the big story of Saturday night/early Sunday morning is in the UK.
Just hours after Manchester United lost 1-0 at home to Southampton and fell further behind in the race for the top four, Miguel Delaney of The Independent and ESPN came out with what on the face of it looks like a very curious story.
According to Delaney, Jose Mourinho has written a six-page letter to Manchester United, saying “I can change” and detailing how he would improve the underperforming squad were he to take over from Louis van Gaal.

Almost immediately after the story hit the internet, super agent Jorge Mendes released a statement via his website denying that the ex-Chelsea boss wrote such a love letter to Manchester United.
“Concerning some news published today in British press about José Mourinho, Jorge Mendes clarifies the following:
‘It doesn’t cross anyone’s mind that a manager such José Mourinho is writing letters to clubs, asking for a job.
It’s ridiculous and absolutely nonsense.'”

To us, this all feels like a well orchestrated campaign for Jose Mourinho to remain in the limelight just as Manchester United hit another crisis point.
Everyone wins (including Delaney) if Mourinho turns up at Old Trafford, which still remains uncertain with the Manchester United board unconvinced about hiring such a divisive, albeit successful manager.
